Day of the Dead Community Picnic – Nov 5
Dia de Los Muertos – Monday, Nov 5th @ Sunset – 5:30pm until 7:30pm
Picnic held in front of High School / Eurythmy Room
The Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and acknowledged around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gathering to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The tradition includes a remembrance table (ofrenda) highlighting sugar skulls, day of the dead bread, marigolds, photos and favorite things of the departed family members. Their favorite foods and drinks are prepared. The families get together and decorate the graves at the cemetery and have a picnic! The celebration continues at home with music, sharing of anecdotes and plenty of laughter!
How will we celebrate at DMS?
Grades 1-12 make art projects during Spanish class to decorate and enhance the ofrenda. During the community potluck picnic we will sample delicious dishes and visit the art display created by the students.
- a dish that reminds you of a dearly departed one to share in the potluck
- a photograph and/or a candle to put on the offering table (you will take it home at the end)
- a picnic blanket
