Dear DMS Community,

After careful consideration, we have made the decision to close DMS starting on March 16 to help contain the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

These are unprecedented times, and we recognize this decision will present a hardship for many of you.  That is why we are sending this message today so that we can give our families as much time as possible to make childcare arrangements.

We have been monitoring advice from County, State, and Federal health and education officials daily and have followed recommended guidelines for preventing the spread of virus. However, consistent with our peers at the Kyrene, Alhambra, Osborne, and Tempe Elementary school districts, the Maricopa County Community Colleges, and ASU, we believe the time has now come for an important shift.

DMS will be closed beginning Monday, March 16 until at least through March 20 as we evaluate the ongoing developments of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The DMS Board will meet Wednesday evening to discuss the length of the closure.

The school closure includes cancelling all after-school activities, clubs, and campus events until further notice. Because South Mountain Community College has closed, the Eurythmy event scheduled to take place there on March 19th has also been cancelled.

We believe this proactive measure is necessary to keep our families safe as we monitor this public health crisis. We recognize this decision raises many questions and we are working to answer them as quickly as we can. We will continue to send regular updates as information develops.

A separate message will be sent to employees regarding plans for staffing, general leave, pay and continued critical operations while school is closed to students.

The Governing Board and DMS Leadership share a responsibility to provide a safe environment for students and staff to ensure high-quality learning.  Thank you for your continued care, kindness and support as we work through this unprecedented time.
